Imagine a week in one of Earth’s most remote and breathtaking destinations—the Lord Howe Island itinerary. Nestled in the Tasman Sea, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed Island is a sanctuary of pristine beaches, lush rainforests, and unique wildlife.
With only 400 visitors allowed at a time, Lord Howe Island offers an exclusive island getaway where nature takes centre stage. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or both, this 7-day Lord Howe Island itinerary will guide you through the island’s best experiences — from scenic hikes to underwater adventures.

A 7-day itinerary would be perfect for enjoying and exploring Lord Howe Island without feeling rushed. But, if you are in Lord Howe for a quick getaway, a 4–5-day itinerary will still give you ample time to witness the greatness of this island.
Flying into The Lord Howe Island, I was amazed by its emerald peaks rising from the Pacific. The exclusivity, with only 400 visitors allowed, made it feel like a private paradise.
If you are wondering how to get to Lord Howe Island from the mainland, the only possible way to reach this breathtaking island is by air. If you are from other major cities in Australia or outside Australia, you must have a layover in Sydney, where QantasLink will take you to Lord Howe Island.

If you are wondering how far Lord Howe Island is from the mainland, it is situated 600 kilometres off the coast of New South Wales in the south Tasman Sea. A flight from Sydney International Airport would take about 2 hours to reach Lord Howe Island.

The island’s policymakers have implemented a regulation allowing only 400 tourists to stay anytime. Due to these restrictions, travelling and accommodation costs are higher on the Island than on other islands worldwide.
These restrictions are placed to preserve and conserve these pristine conditions for future generations while not wholly cutting off tourists from visiting Lord Howe Island. While it is not the cheapest destination, the exclusive experiences and untouched natural beauty would make you feel worth every penny you spend here.

Lord Howe Island in Summer is the best time to visit this beautiful remote island. It offers many more options for adventure activities that might be closed in other seasons, like winter.

Lord Howe Island in winter is from June to August. The Lord Howe Island weather in July is quite chilly, with temperatures dropping to 16 – 18 ℃, while the Lord Howe Island weather in August is warmer than that but still in the early twenties in degrees Celsius.

On the first day after arriving at the airport, you can choose a way to commute to your accommodation. From my experience, booking accommodation beforehand would be much more advantageous than waiting to book one on your arrival.
Because some of these accommodations offer airport pickups, like the Lord Howe Island Holiday House, which has lovely sunset views and other luxurious amenities, I chose this as my stay on Lord Howe Island. After unpacking, I went to the Lagoon in the afternoon. I spent the evening unwinding at the Lagoon Beach and also dipped in the Lagoon’s calm waters.

On the second day, I hiked to Mount Gower, the southernmost part of the Island. I trekked through untouched wilderness, lush green forests, and various flora and fauna. Once I reached Lord Howe Island’s highest peak, I could see the whole Island from a bird’ s-eye view. It was indeed an exhilarating experience. After an exhausting hike, the view justified all the calories I burned to get to the top.
After an exhausting trip back, I went to Salmon Beach rather than heading straight into my accommodation. I enjoyed the whole afternoon and evening watching the waves rocking the shore and realising after an exhausting day of hiking. I also waited until the sunset, which was a mesmerising scenery to watch while lying on the golden sands of Salmon Beach.

On the third day, I decided to explore the marine wonders of Lord Howe Island properly. In the morning, I spent 3 to 4 hours snorkelling and exploring the vibrant coral reefs on Ned’s Beach. I also got to snap a photo with a parrot fish, which tried to bite me off. Who cares? I got what I wanted!
After that, I grabbed a bite to eat and spent the whole evening relaxing at Ned’s Beach. This is the most popular beach on Lord Howe Island, so it is always full of tourists. I spent the evening catching up with other tourists and getting their ideas for what I should do in the remaining days.

The next day, based on a recommendation by a fellow countryman, I joined the Lord Howe History Tour. This tour takes you to historically some of the most critical places on the island. It explains how things used to function from the early ages and how it has shaped Lord Howe Island now.
Then, in the evening, I went on a bird-watching tour, where I saw some rare birds that call the lush green forests of Lord Howe Island their home. After an exhausting day, I returned to my accommodation early and enjoyed a nice dinner.

The next day, I wanted to test my angling skills, so I joined a fishing charter from Lord Howe Island. During this fishing tour, we went to Ball’s Pyramid, which the captain of the boat explained was the tallest sea stack in the world.
Due to this fantastic formation in the ocean floor, abundant fish species were luring beneath the water’s surface. So, I put my skills to the test. After two or three attempts, I managed to catch a large Trevally. After that, I saw some other fish, some released back into the ocean because they were not within limits.

The captain on the boat is a professional person who explains all the nooks and crannies of fishing on Lord Howe Island. They also provide high-quality fishing gear, baits, and other stuff needed for your fishing journey, so all you have to do is put your name down for the fishing tour you like.

After spending the day catching fish, we were allowed to take our catch home, which gave me an idea. The accommodation had a BBQ machine, which I used to grill the fish. Then, I enjoyed the evening watching the sunset on the horizon, sipping some wine, and tasting the fish, I had just grilled.

The next day, due to the adrenaline rush from the previous day, I still wanted to catch some fish. This time, I went to a local shop and bought some equipment for myself. Then, I headed down to Blinky Beach, a rocky beach with fantastic fishing spots, to try my luck. After half a dozen attempts, I caught some fish that were legal in size.

After spending more time there, I headed to the Lagoon in the evening. I went on a kayaking adventure, exploring the lagoon and its surrounding waters with the help of an experienced guide. After a calming experience in the water, I returned to the apartment for the rest of the evening.

On the final day, I went for a little stroll on the Lagoon beach before saying goodbye to this fantastic natural wonder of a place. When it was time for my flight, I returned to my accommodation, packed up, and transferred to Lord Howe Island Airport.

Lord Howe is somewhat expensive compared to other island locations around the world. Here’s a breakdown of what I spent during my time there.
| Expense | Average Cost (Per Day) |
| Accommodation | $ 500 |
| Meals | $ 50 |
| Activites | $ 50 – $ 200 |
| Flights | $ 950 (Return Tickets) |
